Every Thursday afternoon, I spend a few hours in the compounding lab, lovingly known as Pharmaceutics III to us P1′s. With only a one hour break after 4 hours of Pharmaceutics II, Med Chem II, and Pharmacology II, why not go messing around in the lab. It can actually be quite a neat experience. I mean, turning liquids into gels without using any solid substance. Not only is that cool, it’s chemistry, baby!
We get to bring our preparations home. I have yet to use any of them. Technically, they are “not for human use”, but there are days I don’t feel human, so there. Ha.
Sweetening Syrup
Potassium Iodide Oral Solution
Antiseptic Mouthwash
Cinnamon Water
Chocolate Syrup (it tastes just like Her.sheys)
Belladonna Tincture
Camphor Spirit
Calamine/Zinc Oxide Lotion
Strong Iodine (Lugol’s) Solution
Hypotonic Nasal Solution
Benzocaine Toothache Drops
Citric Acid in Lactose
Ketoprofen Gel
Ketoprofen in PLO Gel (ointment)
So while I may not cook much in the kitchen, I play in the lab once a week!

That’s pretty neat! Why aren’t they for human use?
While most of them are from recipes in the National Formulary or the USP, since we are just making them in a school lab and are just learning, I guess they don’t want us to give it to anyone else.
Did you say…chocolate????
So if you ever need any chocolate syrup…..
Your talents never cease!!
